DYSLEXIA ASSESSMENT

Why have a Dyslexia Assessment?

A diagnostic assessment for dyslexia is an important step in helping individuals to better understand their specific challenges with reading and writing. The assessment will highlight strengths that the learner will have and the reasons why they may have been struggling at school.

For many children and young adults, their personal barriers to learning can go unrecognised; a diagnostic assessment can address the underlying causes of their specific difficulties, meaning that specific and targeted recommendations can then be made.

Inform

An assessment can inform the school, parents and individuals about the levels of attainment, cognitive strengths and weaknesses and the need for additional support.

Identify

The assessment will identify strengths and weaknesses. It can be used as evidence to support a request for Access Arrangements for external examinations. A formal diagnosis from an APC accredited assessor can be used when applying for the Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) in further and higher education.

Evaluate

The level and amount of support can be evaluated, alongside the response to intervention. Targets, teaching methods and amount of intervention should be monitored. Onward referral to other specialists may be made if there are co-occurring difficulties, such as numeracy, attention, co-ordination or language difficulties.
