DYSLEXIA ASSESSMENT
Assessment Location and Process
Location
Assessments can take place at your house, your child's school or my home (in Cheam, Surrey).
Before the Assessment
There will be an initial phone call or email to decide whether an assessment is right for your child. You will be asked to fill in a parent questionnaire which includes important information about your child's developmental history and current situation, as well as a visual difficulties questionnaire. Your child's school will also be asked to complete a questionnaire. A standard eye test needs to have been carried out within the two years prior to assessment.
On the Assessment Day
The assessment will take about 3.5 hours to complete with time for movement breaks and a snack. It is important that your child feels at ease and comfortable, so we will have a chat about what to expect and they will have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have. They will be given an age-appropriate visual planner so they can see what activities they will be completing next. They will have the chance to discuss how they found each task as we go through the session.
The assessment will cover aspects of: Reading, writing, spelling, verbal and non-verbal ability, working memory, processing speed and phonological awareness. The activities will be varied and in short, manageable chunks. Most children enjoy the session and find many of the activities fun!
After the Assessment
A diagnostic decision will be made, based on the background information, observations, discussions with you and your child as well as tests results. Recommendations will be made as to the best steps to support your child at school and home, including examinations access arrangements (if appropriate). You will have the opportunity to have a phone call to discuss the outcomes. The report will be e-mailed to you in a password protected document. This will take up to a maximum of 3-weeks from the date of the assessment (usually only 2). The report is usually 25-30 pages long.
